Aden Duale, the defense cabinet secretary, has declared that Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) offices will be stationed in the North-Rift regions to tackle banditry.
According to a statement made by CS Duale on February 13th, the National Police Service (NPS) will need the help of the KDF officers to help alleviate the severe security situation that has been deemed a National Emergency since Monday.
He stated, “The Kenya Defence Forces shall be deployed in assistance of the National Police Service in response to the security emergency created by rampant banditry incidences in Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu Counties.”
The region’s banditry and livestock rustling were also condemned by the defense minister, who issued a sharp warning to anyone responsible that they would be subject to severe punishment.
“The government of Kenya will not take chances with Kenyans’ security.
Anyone, especially the bandits, who commits violent crimes against defenseless bystanders will be dealt with quickly and decisively! “said he.
This occurs in the midst of the North Rift region of the country experiencing upheaval that has caused thousands of cattle to perish, hundreds of citizens to be displaced, and thousands of lives to be lost.
President William Ruto was compelled to issue an order for interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki to transfer to the area plagued by instability, where he is expected to restore security, due to the severe circumstances.
Ruto stated, “I have advised him to leave his office in Nairobi and move to the North Rift to live there till the banditry comes to an end.
In a statement released on Monday, CS Kindiki claimed that over 100 citizens and 16 police officers had been ruthlessly slain in the previous six months by roving bandits and cattle rustlers.
Additionally, the government has issued a three-day deadline for everyone in the nation in possession of illicit firearms and ammunition to voluntarily turn them in.
The Interior Ministry has stated that people who do not turn in their firearms within the allotted period would be subject to the full weight of the law.
