The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have endorsed President Museveni’s candidacy for reelection in 2026.
On Sunday, the leaders gave Museveni their support while attending the opulent wedding of NRM Chairman Moses Karangwa.
At the gathering held at the couple’s home in Budaali village, Bbaale sub-county in Kayunga District, the NRM officials endorsed Uganda’s nearly 4-decade-long leader for another term and added their signatures to the “Muzeeyi Tova ku Main” campaign.
According to senior presidential advisor and head of the national chairman’s office Hadijah Namyalo, President Museveni is the NRM’s “Owen Falls Dam,” while Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the first son, is the “Standby Generator.”
Ms. Namyalo added among cheers from supporters of both Gen. Muhoozi and President Museveni, “When President Museveni, who is our Owen falls dam, goes out, we shall switch on Gen. Muhoozi, who is our standby generator.”
At the occasion, followers of President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi sat in separate camps and sang slogans in support of their respective leaders.
Ms Namyalo continued, “By saying Muzeeyi Tova ku Main, we suggest the President should be up for election in 2026.
Since January 1986, Yoweri Museveni, 78, has served as Uganda’s president.
Following a competitive election, he won reelection in January 2021 for a sixth term.
He was able to run once more and carry on serving after the Supreme Court overturned the 75-year age restriction.
