According to authorities and media accounts, a shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday, killing three children.
The gunman was reportedly killed in a shootout with authorities, according to a tweet from the city’s police department about “an active shooter event” at The Covenant School.
Three children’s deaths were confirmed by a hospital spokeswoman, according to the Fire Department, who cited “several patients” with media outlets like NBC and The New York Times.
According to a Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesperson, John Howser, “Three pediatric patients were transferred to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, all having received gunshot wounds.”
“After arrival, all three were confirmed dead.”
Students at The Covenant School, a private Christian school, range in age from preschool through about age 12.
